NTL Guide to DOIs & ORCID iDs for DOT Researchers

Automatically Connecting Works to Your ORCID Profile

Automatically Connect Works to Your ORCID Profile through Search and Link

Using ORCID's "Search and Link" function for "Works," you can automatically connect your publications to your ORCID Profile. Additionally, every time a publisher or repository, such as ROSA P, connects a work you authored to your ORCID profile, you will receive an email notification that a work has been connected to your profile. The benefits of connecting Search and Link services to your ORCID profile means that you no longer have to manually add works to your ORCID and you can rely on repository information to build your profile. For professional researchers and academics, this saves you time in managing all of your publications and outputs.

Benefits Include:

  1. Save authors time in populating their ORCID Profile
  2. Use repository metadata for accuracy and standardization between how your publications are described
  3. Your publications are added by another source or an additional source, adding to their authenticity and provenance

Video Walkthrough

Video Walkthrough of Adding Works to Your ORCID Profile through Search and Link

This video, made by the Ebling Library at University of Wisconsin-Madison, is an excellent tutorial on how to add works to your ORCID profile. While the tutorial walks you through various Search and Link and other "Add Works" options, it is important to note the following:

All works originally published on ROSA P are linked through DataCite. Use DataCite to search and link your works from ROSA P to your profile. Not sure if you have a work published to ROSA P? Your DOI will contain "10.21949" in the link.

Adding Works from ROSA P through DataCite Search and Link

If you have works that are published in ROSA P and/or have a work with a National Transportation Library DOI* then the following steps are to assist you in linking all past and future ROSA P publications to your ORCID profile automatically.

*National Transportation Library DOIs contain the base: https://doi.org/10.21949/
If your DOI/Work does not contain this DOI base, then you must link the work by manually adding the DOI or by linking through a different servicer such as CrossRef or Scopus. Please consult your publisher or institutional librarian on how to link to other DOIs servicers from your ORCID profile.

Step 1: Login to Your ORCID Profile and Navigate to "Works"

Step 2: Select Search and Link; then Select DataCite

Step 3: Allow DataCite to Access and Update Your ORCID Profile

Step 4: Confirm DataCite/ORCID Token and Access

Step 5: Navigate DataCite Commons to Find Past Published Works Created by You to Claim and Add to Your Profile

A. Navigate to DataCite Commons: https://commons.datacite.org/

B. Find the Works Tab on the Search Bar and search your name

C. Find a Work that needs to be claimed

D. Add that Work to your ORCID Profile. Repeat this for all Works that need to be added
