Federal & State Transportation Statistics

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), part of the Department of Transportation, is the preeminent source of statistics on commercial aviation, multimodal freight activity, and transportation economics, and provides context to decision makers and the public for understanding statistics on transportation. Highlighted below are key publications and resources.

  • Transportation Public Finance Statistics (TPFS) -- replaces Government Transportation Financial Statistics
    This report summarizes transportation revenue and expenditures by mode of transportation (highway, transit, railroads, air, water, pipeline, general support) and revenue-raising instruments.
  • National Transportation Statistics presents statistics on the U.S. transportation system, including its physical components, safety record, economic performance, the human and natural environment, and national security. This large online document comprises hundreds of data tables as well as a glossary and list of acronyms and initialisms.
  • A compact resource that provides snapshots of the U.S. transportation system and highlights major transportation trends.
  • The Surface Transportation Board collects a series of economic data for regulatory purposes and to monitor the financial health of the freight railroad industry.
