US State DOT Wildlife Crossing Structures: Home

Welcome!

Background:

The original US State DOT Wildlife Crossing LibGuide was created in response to a request for information and resources used by state DOTs for the design of wildlife mitigation structures as result of a project of the Western Transportation Knowledge Network to provide a series of resource guides covering topics of interest to the transportation community, particularly in the Western US states. It has grown through the contribution of many transportation librarians, researchers and others throughout the US and Canada. Support for the LibGuide platform comes through the National Transportation Library

The latest update includes the addition of state-DOT wildlife crossings websites with a focus on shared use or the inclusion of human-use paths in response to a request for how other state DOTs consider pedestrian and bicycle paths when building wildlife crossings.

Arrangement and Organization of Libguide:

The libguide is arranged with the most recent source at the top and is divided into tabs of geographical sections with headers listing more specific locations within each tab.

Most links in this guide open to full-text, or to an introductory page that allows the user to down-load the full-text PDF.  In some cases, the links go to the abstract of a fee-based article, in which case researchers, students and instructors should contact the library to see if access can be obtained through inter-library loan.

Wildlife Crossings and Structures

Wildlife Overpass

Roads and highways encroach on wildlife habitats, increasing the risk of vehicle/wildlife interactions and posing a danger, not only to the wildlife, but often to drivers as well.  Transportation agencies continue to address this problem, working to provide safe passage for animals - from turtles to grizzly bears - and provide protection for the travelling public.  This guide identifies many of the studies and guidelines currently in use.
